“By supporting Syrian artists and other artists in exile, the idea is to help them find their place in a new environment, but also to build a genuine community over time: connections are formed, artists support one another and, in turn, create projects for others. It is an exchange.”
Ola Abdallah is an artist of Syrian origin, trained at the Fine Arts School in Damascus before continuing her path in Paris, where she obtained a PhD in philosophy of art. She develops her practice in her studio while exhibiting regularly, through independent forms of dissemination built over the course of encounters.
Alongside her artistic practice, she supports artists in exile through the association Porte ouverte sur l’art, created in particular to assist Syrian artists forced to leave their country. The association helps them find their place in their new environment, develop professional and personal networks, exhibit and sell their work, and gain visibility. Beyond this support, Ola stresses the importance of creating lasting connections between artists: a community based on solidarity, the sharing of experiences and the possibility for each person, in turn, to support others.
