“Our animated films cannot end the war or free political prisoners, but they can increase their visibility — and that matters.”
Daria Yurishcheva is an animation filmmaker, former journalist and co-founder of “Animators Against War”, an international collective of artists opposed to war in Ukraine. Created in the immediate aftermath of the beginning of the war, the collective brings together artists based in Russia and in exile to create short animated films addressing war, censorship and political repression. Many contributors work anonymously because of the risks they face. Now based in France and supported by the Atelier des artistes en exil, Daria continues both her individual practice and the collective’s work. Her films explore issues including endangered minority languages and torture in Russian prisons. Through animation, screenings and future workshops, she creates spaces for awareness, dialogue and solidarity.
