Re-used vans in Southern Crete

In the mountainous area of Southern Crete, where often only one curvy road links the villages to each other and to the bigger cities, one cannot exist without having a car: going from one village to the other, to the doctor, to the school – all this cannot be managed by bike or by foot, neither by public transport. In the sometimes severe conditions, cars ware out fast, and people try to use them as long as possible. And when the vehicles are absolutely wasted, there is no junkyard in the middle of the mountains where to leave the car’s remaining. So, wasted vehicles often get a second life, and are used for other purposes: storage, signboard of a restaurant or just a “white board” for tags. These reused small vans become a colourful element of this beautiful landscape.
